The ILAW Network invites you to the launch of a new report Addressing Gender-based Violence and Harassment in the World of Work: An Analysis of Nigeria’s Legal Framework for Conformity with ILO Convention 190.
After sustained campaigning by trade unionists and feminists, the Nigerian government ratified ILO Convention 190 on Violence and Harassment in the World of Work (C190) on November 8, 2022. The ratification of C190 presents a critical opportunity to reform laws and policies in Nigeria to address gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH) and other forms of violence and abuse at work, and presents expanded opportunities for practitioners to seek justice under existing law. You can read the report by clicking here.
To comply with C190, the Nigerian government must adopt a comprehensive strategy to address and prevent GBVH and other forms of violence and harassment at work. This includes extending legal protections to all workers, including workers in the informal economy and workers in non-standard forms of employment such as contractors and gig workers; addressing structural discrimination against women and other marginalized workers; holding employers accountable for preventing violence and harassment; and creating comprehensive remedies that center the harm to victims and measures to prevent recurrence.
The report outlines the current legal framework in Nigeria designed to prevent GBVH and other forms of violence and harassment at work. It then outlines key provisions of C190 and identifies opportunities to reform law and practice, as well as opportunities for legal practitioners to utilize existing laws, to ensure that all workers in Nigeria enjoy the fundamental right to be free from GBVH and other forms of violence and harassment in the world of work.
