The ILO’s Bureau for Workers’ Activities (ACTRAV) will organize a high-level launch of the International Journal of Labour Research on 26th September 2022 at 13:30 (CET-Geneva time). “Trade Union Revitalisation: Organising new forms of work including platform workers” will be launched during a panel discussions which will bring together authors, researchers , academics, ILO representatives and leaders from trade union movement.
The world of work is faced with multiple transformations in the context of changing labour markets, driven by technological advancement, climate change, globalization and demographic shifts. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, worsening geopolitical tensions, disasters and armed conflicts have further exacerbated these realities. The deficits in decent work and worsening violations of workers and trade union rights further aggravate the situation. Trade unions thus face the challenge of organizing workers who may hold down several part-time jobs, are self-employed and thus unable to join traditional unions in many countries, and are geographically dispersed or working entirely online. The main theme of this issue of the International Journal of Labour Research (IJLR) is the revitalization of trade unions through the need of unity and cooperation among the unions and the possible responses to the challenge of mobilizing and organizing workers in the new forms of work including the platform economy.
